Unpaid internships
If interns are doing valuable work, pay them.
I am not convinced by this. I have done two unpaid* internships now, and am not far from starting a third.
I suppose I am lucky enough that with some minor parental support my student loan covers most costs I have, but I always see internships as pretty much money in the bank in the future. Everyone is trying to get a good job when they graduate and loads end up doing internships. If I can get a few done before I graduate then maybe I wont have to do so many later. Right now my theory is that I might as well spend some of that loan so I can do these internships, and scrape by later.
*They weren’t entirely unpaid, my ‘expenses’ were paid, which meant somewhere around $15 a day, which with the hours I was working comes out around a buck fifty an hour, way below minimum wage.
