Feeling so deeply uncreative. I looked through the last few pictures I got developed; I wish I didn’t just take photos when I, and everyone else, is totally wasted. I like them, but I wanna go out and take pictures when people aren’t fucked up and maybe a roll without a nasty nostril upshot. I wanna go somewhere and just take pictures all day.

To break, what seems like, the extended trend of no homo I have been perpetrating here and on ‘fuck me, please’, this is definitely something worth attention.

In the middle of the week the bill to legalise gay marriage in New York flamed out in the State Senate, another one of the so-close-but-so-far that have gone on throughout the country in the last five years (or even two!).

My feelings on gay marriage are complex, I don’t see why anyone should be denied the right, but equally, I don’t see why anyone would want to be forced into such an institution. I see the role of gay men and women (and therefore the role I give myself…) to push for a broader and more forward thinking understanding of what a relationship is, and what it entails to be ‘in a relationship’; check out Mark Greif’s ideas, especially that of serial monogamy, in the latest n+1.

But, I have long held that the only political conviction I feel strongly about is freedom. That is freedom to be equal in the law, freedom of expression, action amongst many others.

In that respect, I was certainly hoping the bill would pass. It doesn’t surprise me it didn’t; after Prop 8, and most recently the referendum in Maine, I have pretty low expectations about the gay marriage right now, especially if it is being rolled out state by state (which brings up a lingering issue I have with Obama running to the middle ground even faster than Bill could ‘triangulate’).

Anyway, state Senator Diane Savino made a great speech, ultimately in vain, this week during the debate leading up to the vote. I am unsurprised that it was a speech given by a relatively young (and unmarried) woman, it would need to be someone like that to truly see what marriage is in America today, old white guys don’t watch the Batchelorette, or the one Monica Lewinsky presented. And, fundamentally, she is totally right; why is it that is one choice, out of all the choices one can make in a partner, is scrutinised beyond all others?

Owl City, which, as has been mentioned a lot over the past couple of weeks, has totally ripped of the Postal Service, right down to Ben Gibbards distinctive vocals.

This I see as part of a larger problem, in not just music. We are now about eight or nine years into the current incarnation of the Hipster movement. Any early or mid-decade things that hipsters liked will now be ripped off, resold and have any rough edges sanded away.

More than music even, this can be seen in film. The current rash of indie films, like (500) Days of Summer, can trace their lineage right back to Andrew Bujalski’s films from the earlier part of the decade.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just shows that Hipsterism as we understand it now is probably not long for this world. That AdBusters article from a year or two ago was fundamentally flawed in its arguments; Hipsterism isn’t the dead end of Western Civilization, it is just the way that cool or the front edge of culture shall reproduce. Hipsterism is aesthetically self obsessed, but it is for that exact reason that as soon as anything is seen to be too ‘mainstream’ it will die. It is in fact the supposedly shallow self obsession of hipsters that will allow the culture to reinvigorate and refresh itself.

The idea of hipsters will be around, as will I’m sure the way in which Hipsterdom recycles and reuses aesthetics from past countercultures, whilst undeniably creating their own. But, our image of the millennial hipster will not be around forever. And, in a way, isn’t that kind of revolutionary?

I’m in such a color mood recently. I’m really into faded, washed out color photos in the day, and grainy slightly underexposed color in the night.

I sometimes feel like with color people look and expect too much reality, which black and white helps prevent by looking nothing like reality. But, once washed out or grainy or some other wonderful imperfection, people stop looking for reality and look for some approximation of memory.

This was Jennifer Lopez’s first song, I am pretty sure. I don’t really care if it isn’t, it was the first time I remember giving a shit about some chick called Jennifer Lopez. This was for sure before that video where she went to the ‘underground millennium rave party’ with all the lasers (incidentally, that set my expectations for millennium incredibly high).

This video was such a good idea, that JenniCam thing was really going down pretty big right then. In fact, her website looks exactly like JenniCam’s website.

The one thing I always remember about this video was the bit where she dances in the little silver dress and the big ass heels.
I was all ‘mommy, mommy, look how Mariah Carey can dance in big high heels!’ (yeah, I think it was around 2002 I realised they were separate people).
